Gardening in The Bay
Ann
Dulsing at Cape Split
Hey all! Haven't posted in a LONG time, but thought that I'd give an update and try to use this more regularly for communication with family and friends as to what I'm up to these days...
Joel and I went to Cape Split Provincial Park here in Scots Bay this weekend for the a
nnual community Dulsing festival held on the shores of the Bat of Fundy. Dulse is a seaweed that is harvested at the highest tides of the summer and dried in a barn to be eaten for the rest of the year like chips with our homemade beer. It is drying now, despite Hurricane Bill that's arrived today.
Our friend Rick Mosher and Joel harvested quite a pile of it and the boys packed it out of the park on Friday night. Here's Joel with his load!

Organic Grrl in Nova Scotia
Welcome Back, to me - and you, too!
I have neglected my blogspot for quite some time and at the request of my Mother, I've decided to enter into the world of blogging again.
UPDATE:
Since the last post, I've been asked to move to Nova Scotia from my little house in the woods to help some farmers with their cooperative. I'm still in transition and at a loss with what to do with my house, belongings, and cat Maya.
I've searched for real esate to purchase, rent or rent to own and haven't come up with anything suitable yet. So, I'm now looking for a larg-ish apartment in the great big city of Halifax. I have a roommate, if I can find a home.
What to do with all of my crap, though? What does a gal with three couches, six armchairs, seven tables, twenty five chairs and a TON of cooking, preserving, and other food utensils do with all of that stuff?! I'm thinking of having an auction to just get rid of it ALL and start over. In the meantime, I'm crazy busy as I now officially have three jobs - Sales Rep. in Nova Scotia for Speerville Flour Mill (www.speervilleflourmill.ca), Administrator for Maritime Certified Organic Growers (www.mcog.ca) and General Manager for Fresh Air Foods Co-Op Ltd. (www.freshairfoods.com). I'm tired just thinking about it!
I still don't have a home, yet - did I mention that already?
I have been sleeping at 77 Delusion Road on Coldspring Farm in Mosher's Corner, Nova Scotia with Ruth and Paul Collville - members of Fresh Air Food Co-Op. They have been very generous to offer me a place to put my head down at night, but I'm sure they would like their space back as much as I would like to have my own space. It is hard for me not to have a home - did you notice?
I am running the roads throughout Nova Scotia and looking for new customers and friends. It's a busy time of year with farms being planted, animals being born, and organic certification well underway in Atlantic Canada. I hardly have time to think, let alone find friends.
Friends I AM finding, though. I have made a total of ten new friends and reconnected with an old roommate from my Toronto days who is now living in Halifax, too. Funny how the world works. I've been skiing this winter, had three dates, and running the roads steady learning about the layout of southern Nova Scotia and the business climate here as well. Busy times, but trying to have a little fun to balance it all out...
Typing of FUN, I've also decided to have a huge birthday pary this year and seeing as I now know lots of "high end" chefs in Halifax, I'm enlisting their help as well. I'm organizing a "Feast in the Fields" for the late afternoon/early evning on September 22nd and trying to put together a slate of music acts for the late nite crowd to go well into the morning - acts on from 8pm till 4 am! I've decided that if I'm going to turn 30 years old, then I'm going to do it in STYLE! I've been speaking to a lot of people and no one has ever seen anything quite like it in the province, or the Maritimes in general for that matter, and needs to be attempted, at least. I'd like to do it for charity but can't quite figure all that out yet. We'll have to cover costs, but people have promotional budgets, too. Working on it....
More later and hope this has been informative. I've been knitting up booties for a friend having a baby this week sometime and I'd like to start including some artsy stuff here, too. I'll start with some favourite knitting sites for your viewing pleasure.
Happy Spring!

Well, here it is. Despite only having dial-up internet service at home and being as close to a Luddite as a modern grrl comes - I'm now a blogger. I thought that this might be a good way for me to keep in touch with friends and family - seeing as I now live in the middle of nowheresville by myself now and I know curiosity is getting the better of you - HOW DOES SHE DO IT?!
I am slowly turning into a Country Bumpkin. I have four loaves of fresh organic bread in the oven as I type - kamut and oatmeal-whole wheat (in case you were really curious) - and am busy teaching myself how to play a mountain dulcimer that is older than I am. I've also been busy this weekend organizing my new compost pile and clearing a path to it through the overgrown back lawn. I cut the grass today with my new push-mower - no noise or gas - and hung the laundry out on the line. Does it get better?
I also discovered today that I have abot four inches of water in my basement, which has turned off my hot water heater. I guess it will drain sometime - I do have a small stream in the basement all the time that is overflow from the spring that is my fresh water. I'll have a heck of a clean-up job to do when it is gone. Until then, not sure how to solve this problem... any ideas you might have will be appreciated.
I'm trying to source new knitting patterns so I'll have more things to wear during the winter. I better get a good start now on sweaters if I want to wear them for autumn. I can hardly even think about that right now as I'm still in a seater today with the rain and it is the middle of June! If you have any great patterns for funky stuff, email me web addresses or direct me somehow.
That's all for now. More later and hope you are all well and enjoying the summer - the official date is almost here - June 21st.
